Franz Felix (1892-1967)

American artist Franz Felix was a native of Austria. He appears to have been most active in the 1920s and in the 1930s during the WPA or American Regionalist era. He is listed as an artist working in San Francisco, California, in 1927 and in New York City in 1930. While in New York, he lived up the Hudson River in the Rockland County community of Spring Valley. Records there characterize him as a portrait painter.  He died in Tampa, Florida.

This view of New Orleans, Louisiana, is not dated, but the dress of several of the African-American subjects in the painting dates it to the 1920s or early 1930s. The original frame bears a partial label from a Spring Valley framing shop.
