The artist was a native of Baltimore, Maryland, who lived most of his life in Manhattan's Greenwich Village and also spent time on Fire Island. He spent his winters painting at the Ringling Brothers headquarters in Sarasota, Florida. Among his popular subjects were circus scenes, seascapes and the horse-racing world.
He studied with French painter Andre Jean Castaigne. He was married to sculptor Elizabeth Sturtevant Theobald.
He inscribed this painting After the Storm, Lake George. Presumably "(26)" indicates the year he painted it. Another artist who was painting at that location that summer was Georgia O'Keeffe. She was spending time on a rural retreat used by her and her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz.
