Painter, printmaker, tattoo artist and musician John Haywood is an Eastern Kentucky native and a graduate of Morehead State University and the University of Louisville. While in Louisville, he had a studio on Mellwood Avenue, did art shows and played music gigs. In 2004 he started tattooing, learning with “Big Daddy” Tray Benham in Radcliff, Ky. Feeling homesick, he returned to the Mountains and opened his own tattoo/art shop, the Parlor Room, in Whitesburg. He has exhibited at such venues as the Appalachian Artisan Center in Hindman and the KMAC Contemporary Art Museum and the Outsider Art Museum and Gallery in Louisville. His depictions of hillbilly life are unique.
